New SHNB is among the most advanced mental health treatment centres in Canada. It is designed to make patients feel as if they're at home rather than in a hospital. Overlooking the beautiful North Saskatchewan river valley, patients have their own rooms and bathrooms for quiet time or can join their friends in many of the naturally-lit common spaces. Integrated into the 284 bed facility are 96 secure beds for offenders needing mental health care. It represents a major step forward in breaking the cycle of crime and victimization. The two populations will remain separate. "100 years ago, society thought very differently of those who needed mental health care. The old building reflects that thinking. New SHNB is very different. It's not an institution, it's a home. It will feel like living in a healing and therapeutic environment, not a hospital. With SHNB, Saskatchewan will be a model for the rest of Canada." – Derek Miller, VP Finance & Operations, Prairie North Health Region Additional Documents: Ernst & Young Value for Money Report
